Let me relate a not-to-proud moment of my officiating skills(or lack there of). As the plate umpire this past summer working a 16U summer league game, I had a coach who is known for working the umpires. The opposing team is at bat, and I keep hearing this coach yelling that the batter is stepping out of the box when he swings. Watch his feet, watch his feet. Although the batter is standing close to the line, he is in no way even coming close to steppong out. This pitch comes right down the center of the strike zone. I see a strike...I say to myself this is a strike...I stand ready to call a strike, when ball clearly comes out my mouth. I do not know why this happened, just did. Coach is screaming where was that pitch. Being one that never responds to this question, I remain silent. Finally the catcher, who is still framing the pitch for me, respectfully asks where that pitch was. I politely respond with, " I don't know, I was watching the batters feet like your coach told me to." After the inning the coach corners this poor catcher to ask him where that pitch was? I belie that the catcher told him what I had said, because I never heard another word from him to instruct me on how to officiate. Reply to this

Although we all mis a pitch here or there. I do like your answer to the catcher and to the coach. At least he learned that "chirping" does not help his cause. Reply to this
